The Best Drugstore Shampoo and Conditioner Brands

When it comes to the best drugstore shampoo and conditioner, I want something that doesn’t have a ton of potentially-dangerous ingredients.

Overall, making the the switch to clean makeup and skincare has been relatively easy. But I have struggled finding a safe shampoo and conditioner that works for my hair. Using clean hair products often leaves my hair feeling incredibly dirty. I typically only use cosmetics that get a 1 or a 2 from EWG’s Skin Deep database. But for hair care, I’ve made an exception to allow for a 3 or a 4, which is just one step above EWG’s low hazard.

EWG’s rating system goes from 1 to 10, and anything 7 and above signals high risk. So 3 and 4 is still well below that. For me, allowing for 3s and 4s is a necessary compromise. And unlike lotion or makeup, shampoos and conditioners don’t stay on the body.

With this standard in mind, I’ve found effective shampoo and conditioner at my local drug store or on Amazon. Here are the best drugstore brands that make conventional and relatively safe shampoo and conditioner. That means they stand out from other drugstore shampoos and conditioner, which often get a score of 8 or 9 from EWG. Of course, you’ll always want to check the specific product in EWG. I’ve highlighted one from each brand.

Best Drugstore Shampoo and Conditioner

Pantene

I have to admit, Pantene is one of my favorite shampoo conventional drugstore brands. It just makes my hair feel great. Pantene Pro-V Sheer Volume Shampoo gets a 4 on EWG. A good amount of other products from the brand also rank relatively well, according to EWG.

Paul Mitchell

Paul Mitchell Shampoo One gets a 3 on EWG. It’s a classic shampoo that has been around for decades for a reason. Paul Mitchell has a variety of hair products that are relatively safe, according to EWG.

TRESemme

TRESemme Pro Pure Shampoo for Damaged Hair to Recovery is sulfate free and gets a 3. TRESemme has many products that get a 2, 3, and 4, according to EWG. I find this brand to be a great product for the value.

Aveeno

Aveeno Scalp Soothing Oat Milk Blend Shampoo & Conditioner gets a 4 from EWG. If you have a sensitive scalp and don’t want something that will weigh your hair down, it’s worth trying. Aveeno has various hair products that have only moderate risk, according to EWG.
