Are You Getting Enough Water?

It’s really amazing how drinking enough water can positively affect your wellbeing. Along with consistent exercise and sleep, consider drinking plenty of water part of your natural skincare routine. So, are you getting enough water?

The ideal fluid intake is more than 8 cups a day, according to the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. They say you should drink:

  • 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids a day for men
  • 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids a day for women

Anything rich with fluids — including tea, fruit, and salads —  counts toward this total, which can also change based on your size, health conditions, and active lifestyle.

Skincare Benefits of Drinking Water

Drinking enough water benefits your overall health. It can flush bacteria, aid in digestion, and normalize blood pressure. There’s also evidence drinking water impacts your skin for the better. One 2015 study asked women to add 8 cups of water to their typical water consumption. After 30 days, the women in the study saw improved superficial and deep skin hydration.

After 30 days, the women in the study saw improved superficial and deep skin hydration.

The authors concluded that high levels of water consumption could positively impact normal skin physiology, particularly for those who drank less water before the study began.

A 2018 literature review came to a similar conclusion: drinking water may increase your skin’s moisture and reduce signs of dryness and roughness, especially in people who previously drank little. That’s good news if you don’t drink much today: you’re likely to see more positive changes to your appearance if you start now.
