This 4-Step Skincare Routine Is Safe for Pregnancy

Pregnant? A streamlined skincare routine is an easy way to take care of yourself. In addition to choosing products that multitask, you should make sure products are safe for pregnancy, since ingredients like endocrine disruptors could impact your developing baby.

Setting up an easy routine will pay off once the baby comes, too. Sleep deprivation and breastfeeding go together like mama and baby. And common cosmetic ingredients like octinoxate and oxybenzone have been found in mothers’ breast milk, so you still need it to be safe.

To make your life easier, here is a 4-step skincare routine that is pregnancy safe. Many of these products are available at clean beauty retailer Credo Beauty, and all get a safe rating of 1 or 2 in EWG’s Skin Deep Database

Easy Pregnancy Safe Skincare Routine

Morning Routine

Step 1. Cleanser

Osea Ocean Cleansing Milk: This gentle cleanser will start the day with a fresh slate. Your skin will feel calm and soft.

Step 2. SerumIndie Lee Stem Cell Serum: A face serum acts as a more concentrated, lightweight version of a face lotion. This one has hyaluronic acid for moisture and echinacea stem cells for fullness. You should apply a serum after you wash your face and before you moisturize.

Step 3. Retinol Alternative Moisturizer Alpyn Beauty PlantGenius Melt Moisturizer: After you serum dries, apply this lightweight moisturizer. It has bakuchiol, a natural retinol alternative that has research to back up its anti-aging power. It will smooth out your skin, almost like a primer.

Step 4. Sunscreen

Neutrogena Pure & Free Baby Mineral Sunscreen Lotion: Apply this safe and moisturizing zinc sunscreen as your final step. You will have to rub it in a bit, but the white film will eventually penetrate and leave your skin silky. I find it also works well with makeup.

Nighttime Routine

Step 1. Makeup Remover/Cleanser

Garnier SkinActive All-in-1 Micellar Cleansing Water: Wipe off the day with this multitasker.

Step 2. Serum

Indie Lee Stem Cell Serum: Apply a fresh coat of your serum at night.

Step 3. Retinol Alternative Booster

BYBI Beauty 1% Bakuchiol in Olive Squalane Oil Booster: Again, get the anti-aging power of bakuchiol with this velvety moisturizer booster that is made for nighttime use. It’s also under $20, making it a great value.

Step 4. Moisturizing Oil

Viva Naturals Sweet Almond Oil: For extra hydration, rub in a simple sweet almond oil. It’s packed with natural vitamin E, zinc, potassium, proteins, and fats. Unlike the vitamin E oil sold at drug stores, it is not derived from petroleum. When my skin is dry, I like to apply a generous layer of almond oil before bed.

This 4-step routine will work well after you’re done with pregnancy and nursing. The only change you may want to make? Adding a safe retinol. If you’re ready, learn more about that controversial yet powerful ingredient here.
